Thank you for returning!

I enjoy receiving emails from the President. No message from any previous President has ever landed in my inbox.
Having said that, what is President Obama saying? We have a long road ahead of us, we have a lot of work to do. We have to work together.
I could be cynical and say “same old, same old”. But it’s a message that bears repeating. Especially since the previous administration seemed to be intent on communicating a very different message: Get all you can for yourself, forget about everyone else.
This was, of course, not a new mentality invented by Bush Jr. It summed up the attitude of many people in the land of the free, and one of the main reasons why I have chosen to live abroad. However, things in the UK have been going steadily downhill since the Thatcher era, when the American attitude of “me first” began to dominate.
Obama is talking about putting money into affordable healthcare, education and investing for the future. He is even talking about tax cuts for low-income families. I can get behind all of these aims.

Traditionally in the UK, class royalty ruled, (in other words, “us first”).
When our Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, visited the States a couple of weeks ago, President Obama urged him to apologise for the financial disaster that is currently ravaging Britain, but he refused. Brown is the former Chancellor of the Exchequer, which means he was in charge when the main methods of regulating the banking system were removed.
I am certainly not blaming him for the current international financial situation. But he is culpable for Britain’s current financial problems to some extent. Unemployment here has reached the 2 million mark, and it is being predicted that the UK economy will be the last to recover. Thatcher destroyed the manufacturing base in this country, and the economy is now heavily dependent upon service industries, including financial services.
It’s that kind of short-sightedness that led to the banking meltdown and the surge in unemployment figures. Of course, Britain was eager to join in the rush to sell mortgages to people who clearly could not afford them.

Meanwhile, Brown urged President Obama and Congress to avoid protectionism. “Protectionism” is another word for safeguarding American jobs, and no politician who cared about our economy, the future of our country or his own political career would avoid doing it. Having said this, I agree with Brown in that the economy is a global one and we need to safeguard everyone’s jobs and futures as much as we can. (Too bad he didn’t think about this when irresponsible borrowing and lending were being touted as ways to shore up the UK economy.)
We have to work together. I completely agree with the President on this one. Either we learn from history or we will be condemned to repeat it.
